I would like to point out an alternative solution that could work for some Mercedes owners. Some of the radio units are made by Becker (especially E and S class models). After many hours of web research, I found this link below which shows that Becker can take your unit, modify it by adding an AUX input, and return it to you for about $200. I haven't done this yet but am considering it. It appears that you can keep your existing CD Changer. It works by using the Cassette input and is activated by inserting any cassette in the deck and plugging in your iPod, MP3 or XM/Sirius Radio into the 3.5mm jack which they add to the back of the unit (you run the wire out thru the ash tray, for example). The cassette is used just to activate the system; it does not play thru the cassette deck.
See the link here: http://www.beckerautosound.com/mercedes_year_model.html to find your car and radio. Then click on the model and then click on "Aux Input" to see if your radio can be modified. (In my case, I have a 2000 E320)
I'll report back if I decide to do this and let you know the results. |

Yes, please report to all of us if you do this! although with the compression loss already with mp3 and the like I think I would go with the 9.99 cassette adapter route versus this. The fm transmitter route really doesn't work in any metro area. And for the additional 100 bucks I would probably do the cd/fiber optic install so that I am not tied to the head unit.
Again, if you do it let us know how it works!! |
